sin sucks.

why do we try to find the “good” in sin? we say some pretty stupid things in order to defend and/or justify it…  like, “oh, you’ve got to see this movie – it’s amazing, and it only has a few sex scenes and hardly any swearing” – what?! or, “sorry I yelled at you, but I wasn’t feeling good, I had a bad day at work, and I felt like you were insensitive” – huh?! …how about saying: I walked out of that movie… it was sin. and, sorry I yelled, I was wrong.

bringing up this kind of subject makes people uncomfortable. “he thinks he’s so holy” (as eyes roll…) or “if we get all extreme we won’t be able to have any fun” – since when is seeking to be more holy wrong? and, do you really think living like Jesus will rob you of your fun?  maybe you just don’t understand fun… Jesus said, “A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of “John 10:10. – that kind of life sounds pretty fun!

I want, so badly, to live a life that calls sin what it is: SIN. It is wicked and, left unaddressed, it will callous my heart, deafen my ears and numb my sensitivity to the Spirit. not dealing with it may create some form of psuedo-peace with others but in the end, such false friendship will be exposed and judged.

someone said the other day, “that kind of thinking is old-school and out-of-touch…  you’ll alienate yourself from everyone with that kind of attitude towards sin.  didn’t Jesus hang with sinners?” – hmmm, Jesus never sinned or compromised – when He was with sinners, He brought truth to lies, light to darkness – He never embraced their compromises… it’s ludicrous to suggest that He was anything less than Holy – 24/7. And Jesus knew how to deal with this kind of thinking much better than me – check this out…

When the Pharisees, a money-obsessed bunch, heard him say these things, they rolled their eyes, dismissing him as hopelessly out of touch. So Jesus spoke to them: “You are masters at making yourselves look good in front of others, but God knows what’s behind the appearance. What society sees and calls monumental, God sees through and calls monstrous” Luke 16:14-15 MSG.

if I’m going to experience God’s best, then I have to deal with sin – may I do it with grace, tact & total truth.  but, may I also do it with speed and accuracy.  this is where I choose to live.

sin sucks the life, hope, truth and joy right out of us.  it’s a vacuum stuck in the on position – stay far from it, or you will end up in a whirlwind that’s disgusting, dirty, dismal… and, ultimately ends in, death.

sinning less – living more, chilly

Yes it does. Good article. POPS

Sinning less is like reaching the lost. We like the sound of it, until we actually get into a position to follow through with it. We so need the Spirit. More than we realize. Thanks – that was convicting and convincing!

Dude, what a great point! And, furthermore, it’s a SIN to not reach the lost!! We can talk a big game, but playing & WINNING is a whole other thing!

Thanks for the comment.

Great post. Holiness must be desired. Then our desire to hold onto those other things will lose their grip on us. If it’s not desired but rather begrudgingly accepted as part of the Christian life – then we will never find joy in it, but only the joy we think it “robs” us of.

Selfish fulfillment can NEVER be joy – b/c it’s JESUS, then OTHERS, then yourself to think about in J.O.Y.

great post! thanks

There is so much freedom when you can be truthful about sin. I don’t feel like the devil can get me anymore because I’m quick to give up my sin. I’m thankful for the people in my life who have spoken truth to me about my sin with speed and accuracy – it shows how much they love. I working to do the same for others.

Thanks, Captain!

Yeah. Sin is icky. I’m working on being even quicker to call it what it is – in myself & others – and with tact & in love. Not doing something you know you’re supposed to do is also a sin (like you mentioned – reaching the lost). I think we tend to forget this & “stay away from the big sins” but yet sin by NOT doing something too.

WOW!
I love you.

Right on. I need to be reminded of this, everyday!

great points. good comment above comparing it to reaching the lost.

If we (I) dared to look at ourselves and truly see what God sees, we’d puke, but God sees beyond the sin at what COULD be and though not dismissing the filth of sin, God still loves us and wants us to change.
To dismiss the smallest sin is to throw God’s love back at him and say: I don’t need you.”
Please forgive me, Lord, for all the times I did just that.

Thanks, Pastor Chilly, for making me think about the stink.

Great Post and the comments about moving from the theoretical to the practical are spot on! Challenging!

SO GOOD…i want to sin less and really LIVE…reminds me of a verse I really like…

“JOYFUL are the people of integrity who follow the law of the Lord. JOYFUL are those who obey his decrees and search for him with ALL of their hearts. They do NOT compromise with evil and they ONLY walk on HIS paths…” Psalm 119:1-3

thanks for the post!

Whit, you are my 5,000th Comment @ iChilly! You should get a prize or something… sure, why not, see me & I’ll hook you up with ’something’!

Dude, I missed it by one? Typical! :)

This really challenges me! I need to remind myself of this every minute of every day! Thanks, Pastor Chilly! :)

Powerful post! love the title, sin sure sucks, especially when we deny that we have any sin in us or refuse to correct sinful behavior when we see it, thanks for the reminder.

TOTALLY Needed this. Thank you.
